98 all the way
Just remember our cars are made in Japan which use 100 so power output is rated on 100 RON you less you use the less power you get

Just to balance out Scooby :), I've only ever used 91 in all my cars (including a V8, Fiat, Toyota blah blah) and never had any fuel-related problems. My 2004 Forester has only had 91 in it (except for the occasional 94 E10) and also never had any problems. The cars may very well be tested in Japan, but the ECU mapping is structured for 90RON out here. Good enough for me.

I just use the standard unleaded in mine (the one without the ethanol), runs fine. If it was too low you'd know about it. My last car was an XR5 turbo focus and if I put anything less than 98 it would ping its brains out. Might try something a little higher next fill up and see if it goes any harder. :)

They go great on 98
First free tank of petrol was 91 and the deference 98 makes was unberlieveable
Try it before u make ur mind up

Told ya 98 all the way
Better for car
Better for tank
Better for your driving experience

I had another read of the XV manual today and under the the part where Subaru says to use fuel with RON of 90 or higher they do say that your vehicle will benefit by using premium fuels! So I asked the service department what they recommend, and guess what they also say to use premium! Something to do with the boxer engine having "carbon problems in the cylinder heads" on low RON fuel. But they did tell me that when they service the XV they put a cylinder head cleaning treatment in the fuel to fix that problem. Seems to defeat the purpose of buying premium imo! But I will try it!

Got any evidence to back that up ScoobyXV-L? Here is a question I put to BP Australia.
Will the performance of my engine (2012 Subaru XV Impretza) drop over time if I use your regular unleaded fuel? The manufacturer recommends fuel with a RON of 90 or higher. I read on your ultimate fuels site that this will happen if I use regular unleaded? Is regular unleaded bad for my cars performance over time? If I use your higher RON fuel how much faster will my car go? and how much more fuel economy will I get? How many more kilometers will my engine last by using RON 95 instead of RON 91?
Lets see if they reply?
Here is a reply from a fuel company!
1. If the manufacturer has recommended a minimum Octane of 90, then your vehicle performance will not drop off over time, except due to other factors (ie engine wear, etc)
2. You can use Regular Unleaded Petrol quite safely for vehicle performance over the life-time of the vehicle
3. If you use our higher Octane fuel, Vortex 95, you should get better performance over a period of time, as your engine may respond better to the higher Octane (depends on how the engine is tuned), and also because there is a very effective detergent additive in the higher Octane fuel, which is designed to clean, and keep clean, the entire fuel system, particularly the injectors. If a deposit does start to build up on the injectors, the engine performance drops off, and you get less kilometers per litre, so keeping the injectors clean does keep the vehicle up to top performance.
4. How many more kilometers per litre you may get using the higher Octane is not possible to predict, as it also depends on how you drive the vehicle, how often, what load you are carrying, or towing etc. You have to try it to find this out yourself.

This is a womans point of view...
I have only ever put premium into all of the new Subarus we have bought... (not because I know anything at all about fuel, but because that's what my darling husband told me to do LOL).
But it does makes sense to me.
You spend a lot of money on a new car, and if there are two different sorts of fuel (one is supposedly better than the other) then I would prefer to put the 'better' fuel into my new car. I'm not going to quibble over a few extra dollars at the fuel bowser.
Husband tried to explain to me why premium makes the engines last longer, burns cleaner and gives better fuel economy and performance, but honestly...car talk, in one ear and out the other *shrug*.

I only give my lovely XV premium :)

Here here good one deb your husband is very very very smart

Just amusing myself here but.... I have now trialed premium 95 RON fuel compared to 91 RON, and here are my results!
95 RON fuel is $11.07 dearer than 91 RON per refill of my XV tank, wow! (based on 55 lt)
A tank of 95 RON takes the XV 26km further than a tank of 91 RON, big deal!
So this means that it is $7.89 more expensive to travel the same distance you can with 91 RON unleaded fuel!
Over 100000 km this works out to be roughly $1088.40 dear than using 91 RON!
As for the performance, the XV was roughly .4 of a second faster to 100 km per hour and 0.5 of a second faster from 100 km per hour to 140 km per hour.
For me the overall cost far outweighs the benefit of the premium fuels and there are heaps of Subaru cars for sale that have done over 300k.

I'm currently on Shell Nitro+ (97 RON) from Caltex Gold (95 RON) for both my cars, just a trial. I have to take an effort and finally notice the difference, if any as I use it.

I always use 98 no matter what the higher the better
Premium has a built in cleaner
